Synopsis: This method unit aims to demonstrate how effective outdoor education connects outdoor experiences, conceptual reflection, theoretical and professional development. A range of curriculum and pedagogical issues relevant to the delivery of outdoor education in schools will be examined. This unit includes three days of field programs.

Objectives: By the end of this unit students will have acquired an understanding of the nexus between learning, teaching and experiential education theory including; the skills to plan individual lessons and units; the skills to plan trips from within a school setting; strategies for teaching in the classroom and outdoors; an insight into managing the resourcing, staffing and implementation of the subject within a school setting; an appreciation of a range of professional issues unique to Outdoor Education; and an understanding of the role of the outdoor educator as a reflective practitioner.

Assessment: Assignment 1 (2000 words): 50%, Assignment 2 (2000 words) 50%. Note: For On-Campus students; attendance requirements for this unit will consist of a series of seminars and workshops (dates will be confirmed at the beginning of the semester). There will also be 3 days of professional development (these are compulsory).

Off-campus attendance requirements: There are no attendance requirements for off-campus students; and Note: Clayton students undertake unit by off-campus mode only.
