Synopsis: This unit will provide an introduction to teaching and curriculum in art appreciation, history and theory. Particular emphasis is placed upon the study of contemporary Australian art in the secondary school visual arts curriculum. Students will be required to design and demonstrate lessons in aspects of art appreciation and art history at a range of levels in the secondary school.

Objectives: This unit requires students to reflect on aspects of art history, theory and criticism in order to design teaching and learning experiences in art appreciation. Students will make a selection of art works as the basis for teaching in the secondary art curriculum, and design materials to resource their teaching. Students will be introduced to a range of teaching strategies and resources and encouraged to develop their own teaching style and philosophy.

Assessment: (Clayton on-campus FT students): Minor research project and presentation (1500 words): 30% + Curriculum Design Project (equivalent 2500 words): 70% + Successful completion of supervised school experience and file + (Gippsland off-campus students): Minor research project (1500 words): 30% + Curriculum Design Project (equivalent 2500 words): 70%

Prerequisites: Two full years of study in visual art at tertiary level
