Synopsis: This unit will provide an introduction to teaching and preparation strategies necessary for the secondary teacher of media studies. Students taking this unit will investigate contemporary issues in the media, such as representation, narrative and ideologies in media forms of television, film, print media, popular media texts and the Internet. Students will draw upon their knowledge of these issues to design and implement lessons suitable for a range of levels in the secondary school.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will understand new media, students will have investigated a variety of Australian initiatives in the media studies. Students will also have learned how to teach the critical vocabularies in relation to the analysis of media texts. In addition, students will also have developed the confidence and expertise to design lessons across all levels of the secondary curriculum.
Assessment: Media Analysis (2000 words): 50% + Writing a workshop for Professional Development (2000 words): 50%.
Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
Prerequisites: Two full years of study in Media Studies
