Synopsis: This unit is an introduction to the relationships between learning and teaching in chemistry. Teaching strategies and contexts for use in chemistry classes in Years 7 to 12 will be explored. Methods for assessing and monitoring student learning in chemistry will be introduced. The relationship between science, technology and society will be a focus. Students studying on-campus will participate in a camp in March.
Objectives: The broad aims of this unit are to realise and justify the importance of teaching Chemistry in the secondary school curriculum; to demonstrate an awareness of issues associated with the study of Chemistry. These issues include the relationship between science, technology and society; real world chemistry; the barriers raised by traditional science and chemistry curricula.
Assessment: Assignment 1: Student learning (3000 words): 75% + Assignment 2: Learning Log (1000 words):25% + Student participation in the unit is vital and an 80% attendance requirement is required so students can fully participate in the workshops via attendance or on-line chat forum. A successful practicum is required.
Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
Prerequisites: Bachelor of Science or Applied Science with a major study in chemistry, a minor study in chemistry or biochemistry is essential
