Synopsis: This unit is an introduction to the practical application of current theories of language acquisition to the teaching of English as a second language in Years 7 to 12 in a variety of different contexts, ranging from intensive on-arrival language centres to similar needs mainstream classes. Students learn to assess the language needs of English as a second language (ESL) learners and use a variety of different approaches to develop their own materials and teaching activities to meet the diverse language, cultural and educational needs of ESL learners.
Objectives: The learning objectives of this unit are to understand the process of language learning; to appreciate the range and diversity of ESL learners; to become familiar with the major curriculum documents in the area; to gain an overview of ESL methodology. As a result of studying this unit students are expected to plan appropriately to meet the needs of ESL learners; base their teaching on an understanding of TESL theory.
Assessment: Annotated bibliography (2000 words) : 40%; + Case Study (2000 words) 40%; + Class Participation: 20% + An 80% attendance rate is required in order for students to participate fully in workshop activities.
Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
Prerequisites: 1) A sub-major in either a foreign language or in linguistics. Without this, students are required to audit either EDF4011 or EDF6233. 2) Students who did not complete their secondary education in an English-speaking country or who have not studied for three years at tertiary level in an English-speaking institution, are required to attend an interview and to provide a report from an IELTS test taken no more than 12 months prior, showing a minimum of 7.0 in all skills (or equivalent language level on an officially recognised alternative test).
