Synopsis: The unit will address the dimensions of being a contemporary early childhood professional including professional development, advocacy, professional ethics, networking, career development, and working effectively in the broader community. There will be exploration of various roles played by early childhood professionals. Because of the nature of this unit, students will be expected to have completed the equivalent of three years of tertiary study before enrolling in it.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate an appreciation for and understanding of the diversity of roles and responsibilities undertaken by an early childhood professional and the contexts where that work occurs; understanding of the AECA Code of Ethics and an appreciation of its role in early childhood professional decision making; understanding of the key issues concerned with advocacy for the profession; ability to articulate and defend their personal early childhood philosophy especially through their professional portfolio; awareness of the professional associations, resource and training agencies that are available to support them as professionals.
Assessment: Written assignment (2500 words): 60% + Service report (1500 words): 40%.
