Synopsis: Unit will include: an examination of courses of study, curriculum guides and handbooks that teachers regard as resource material. Assessment and evaluation procedures, together with appropriate statistical methods. Practical application of computers to the mathematics classroom. Links between mathematics and language.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students should have gained further experience in the use of learning materials, resources and programs available for teaching primary school mathematics (including computer programs); have gained experience with planning for maths education, with special consideration of using computers in the primary maths classroom; understand the formal and informal assessment methods used by teachers to record student progress in mathematics; be aware of current issues associated with mathematics education; have had experience with planning for an integrated curriculum, with a special focus on integrating maths, English and the other KLAs; have experience with researching a maths topic of interest to them; have developed an understanding of 'administrative' statistics.
Assessment: Seminar paper (5000 words): 40% + Written report (3000 words): 30% + Folio: 30%
