Synopsis: This unit explores Indigenous and non-Western traditional education in the global world of education. Students will investigate Indigenous and non-Western traditional education systems of, for example, New Zealand, Pacific and Asian nations, and North American Indian communities. Of critical importance will be an examination of the role of education in nation building; the positioning of Indigenous and traditional education systems within nation states; the retention and maintenance of Indigenous and traditional knowledge through education; and intellectual property rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities within emerging national education systems.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this Unit students should: 1. Have an understanding of the terms 'Indigenous' and 'Traditional' as they pertain to education 2. Be able to explore the role of education in nation building and the place of Indigenous and local non-Western traditional education claims within nation building 3. Become aware of issues pertaining to the retention and maintenance of indigenous and non-Western traditional knowledge through education, 4. Understand current thinking on intellectual property rights as they pertain to indigenous peoples and local communities; 5. Identify the role of international organisations in protecting, preserving and maintaining Indigenous and non-Western traditional education systems, 6. Be able to describe the ways in which these concepts are related to each other and to contemporary forces of globalization and technologisation, and 7. Be able to use this knowledge when developing educational content in their area of expertise
Assessment: Small Project (3000 words): 50% + Case study (2000 words): 30% + Topic presentation (equivalent to 1000 words): 20%
