Offered:
Clayton Second semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: This elective aims to enhance students' understanding of difference in the classroom via an exploration of some of the theoretical and practical considerations related to difference in Australia's schools. Using students' experiences of teaching and learning (as well as contemporary research, pop culture and curriculum materials) this unit will develop students' capacity for critical analysis and provide insights into how to respond to the increasingly diversified learning spaces which educators and students occupy. Each week there will be a workshop style session, involving lectures, group work, student presentations and visiting speakers.
Objectives: Students taking this unit will engage in discussions about diversity, agency, identity, inclusivity, indigeneity, race/ethnicity, sexuality, gender, disability, refugees and illegal immigrants. Students will also consider some of the emotional dimensions of negotiating conflict and discomfort in the classroom. On completion of this unit students will have a broader understanding of Australian attitudes to difference and the issues facing schools because of that context. Students will also have developed an understanding of how cultural factors influence the maintenance of particular pedagogies and curriculum content. Students will also have the opportunity to develop strategies for promoting inclusivity in the classroom and they will undertake an applied project that explores an issue of interest to them in the field of difference and diversity.
