Synopsis: Skills in risk management, injury prevention and emergency response. Legal requirements of conducting sport and outdoor recreation activities. Theory and application of risk management skills in sport and outdoor recreational pursuit. Applied practical skills in the safe conduct and management of sport and outdoor recreational pursuits will be required, including an emphasis on the conduct of Challenge Ropes Course and advanced wilderness first aid. The unit includes eight days of field programs.

Objectives: Upon completion of this unit students will have acquired a working knowledge of the risk management strategies in the conduct of sport and outdoor recreation; practical ability in first aid in the outdoors; management tools in the identification, assessment, control and mitigation of program liability and risk; specific case knowledge of local and international outdoor pursuit liability and risk management.

Assessment: Assignment 1 (2000 words equivalent): 50% + Assignment 2 (2000 words equivalent) + Satisfactory participation and completion of field programs is compulsory.

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
