Synopsis: This unit will introduce students to Asian theatre work, both past and present. A special focus will be given to recent developments in Asian theatre, including the community theatre movement in the Phillipines and Thailand; contemporary Japanese theatre such as Butoh; and intercultural work by Ong Keng Sen (Singapore) and Rustom Bharucha (India). The unit will emphasise reading this performance work in the historical and political context of Asian societies.
Assessment: Class exercise (2700 word equivalent): 60% + Essay (1800 words): 40% + Third-year students will be expected to have undertaken further reading into the history and traditions of different Asian theatre practices
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour workshop) per week
Prerequisites: First and second year Arts sequence
