Synopsis: Leadership and management principles as related to health systems. Key management and organisational theories, interface of theory and practice, human resource management, sources of power and influence. Techniques for managing organisational change, building effective and adaptive health systems, elements of strategic planning, difference between leadership and management. Leadership skills, team building, conflict management, network development and management, strategic alliances, application of leadership and management principles to solve complex health care problems.

Objectives: On completion of this unit students should be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of key management and organisational theories and an understanding of the interface between theory and practice in the management of health care systems; 2. describe the components of human resource management; 3. describe sources of power and influence; 4. describe techniques for managing organisational change and for building effective and adaptive health care systems; 5. describe the elements of strategic planning; 6. demonstrate an understanding of the difference between management and leadership, 7. demonstrate skills in leadership, team building and conflict management; 8. describe the development and management of networks and strategic alliances; 9. apply the principles of leadership and management to solve complex problems in public health settings.
