Synopsis: Topics include an outline of the multimedia information retrieval problem; functional overview of information retrieval; deterministic models of information retrieval systems; conventional Boolean, fuzzy and vector space model; text analysis and automatic indexing; image, video and speech retrieval and techniques; application and use of retrieval paradigms in web search engines; standards for text markup; automatic query formulation; system-user adaptation and learning mechanisms; intelligent information retrieval; retrieval evaluation; review of new theories and future directions.
Assessment: Examination: 50% + Assignments: 50%
