Honours Dissertation Part 1 ( 12 points, SCA Band 1, 0.250 EFTSL)

Synopsis: Students will design and conduct a research project within the cognitive sciences. The project will include summarising current research literature, testing hypotheses, data analysis, integration of findings with those of others, and the provision of a final report in the form of a minor dissertation. The dissertation (no more than 15,000 words) will be on an approved topic of the student's choice, determined in consultation with the student's supervisor. A minimum of one hour per week consultation averaged across the period of enrolment is required. In the process of preparing their dissertations, students will be required to participate in a non-graded honours seminar.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students should be able to: 1) examine a large body of relevant literature and distil from that, those issues most pertinent to their chosen area of research within the Cognitive Sciences 2) independently design and conduct a research project, and analyse and interpret the data obtained 3) integrate the outcome of their own research into a larger body of knowledge in that field 4) provide, in the form of a dissertation, a report that effectively communicates the details of their research, in all respects, at a publishable standard.

Assessment: Dissertation 15,000 words

Contact Hours: 1 hour supervisory meeting per week

Prerequisites: Undergraduate degree with Cognitive Science, Psychology or related major
