Design of steel and timber structures ( 6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL)

(ENG)

Leader:

Offered:
Clayton First semester 2006 (Day)

Synopsis: This unit introduces the design of steel and timber framed structures in accordance with the design codes. It enables the students to understand the process for the design of steel and timber structures and the background knowledge which leads to the development of the current steel and timber design codes. Students will understand the behaviour of steel and timber structural components under realistic design conditions and relate the knowledge of design to practical design problems in a project-based learning environment.

Objectives: 1. understand the process for the design of steel and timber structures 2. understand the background knowledge which leads to the development of the current steel and timber design codes 3. understand the behaviour of steel and timber structural components under realistic design conditions 4. relate the knowledge of steel and timber design to practical design problems in a problem-based learning environment 5. understand the advantages of using steel and timber as construction materials 6. carry out the design of steel and timber structural components following the standard design procedure 7. be able to use steel and timber structures design codes 8. carry out simple costing procedure for steel and timber structures.

Assessment: Group projects and practice class exercises: 30% + Class and online quizzes: 30% + Final examination (2 hours): 40%

Contact Hours: Three hours of lectures, two hours of practice classes and seven hours of private study per week
