Synopsis: Extension of CHI1110. Through investigation into the key intellectual issues of a multi-disciplinary nature in post-Mao China, this unit will introduce students to a range of different representations of Chinese culture and society through various research projects.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be expected to have acquired: 1. A good critically-informed understanding of key issues in Chinese cultural studies, building on the knowledge acquired in Chinese 11. 2. An in-depth knowledge of recent developments in Chinese literature and Chinese cinema. 3. The ability to write and speak effectively in standard Chinese on a range of issues. 4. The basic analytical and critical skills necessary for research in Chinese cultural studies, building on the skills acquired in Chinese 11.
Assessment: Two written research projects in Chinese (2,500 words/ 3,000 characters): 50% + Seminar paper in Chinese (1,250 words/ 1,500 characters): 25% + Oral presentation: 15% + Class participation performance: 10%
Contact Hours: 3 hours (3 x 1 hour seminars) per week
Prerequisites: CHI1110 or equivalent
