Synopsis: This fieldwork will challenge the student to integrate their academic and vocational training to synthesis knowledge into a practical project plan. Not only will students gain confidence by participating in a work environment but also provide tangible benefit to their participating agency. The unit includes assessment and collection of data, design of an intervention to address a health issue, execution of the plan, and evaluation of outcomes. Students will become competent at entry level in all areas of dietetic practice. Principles of management of workload, reporting competently in line management, and responsibility for project benchmarks will be understood.

Objectives: By the end of this unit students will be able to: 1. utilise nutrition and health related data and scientific literature in identifying nutrition problems in the community; 2. illustrate the integration of public health and health promotion theory and epidemiology into practice in community or public health nutrition settings; 3. employ the program planning cycle and determine goals, objectives and plans for dealing with nutrition issues in the community; 4. adopt effective project management, team work and communication skills and work effectively within the placement organisation; 5. collect and evaluate the literature related to a community or public health nutrition issues and apply research and evaluation findings to practice; 6. organise, establish and document data, process and communication on a community or public health nutrition issue into written reports and oral presentations; and 7. adopt a questioning and critical approach in all aspects of practice and evaluate practice on an ongoing basis.

Assessment: Essay: 40% + Group presentation: 30% + Individual summary: 30%

Prerequisites: Completion of Years 1, 2 and 3 and Semester 1 of Year 4 of the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics
