Clayton Second semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: This unit focuses on the nutritional management of specified acute conditions. A one week lecture block will be followed by a program of nutritional assessment of patients, developments of their treatment plans, monitoring and outcome reporting over a 2 week practical placement. The specific topics include the mangagement and dietetic treatment of cystic fibrosis, allergy, infectious disease, burns and specialised paediatric patients.
Objectives: On completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. apply knowledge previously learned to the nutritional management of patients with any clinical condition; 2. demonstrate an organised, professional and ethical approach to casework; 3. demonstrate proficiencies in dietetic competencies, work autonomously and manage a workload that is equivalent to 100% of the competencies of a base level graduate dietitian; 4. demonstrate the ability to manage: a. Time, b. Caseload (prioritisation, delegation and goal planning), c. People (patients, staff, teams), d. Resources (programmes, referrals, equipment), e. Food supply to meet patients' requirements; 5. demonstrate reflective skills whilst on clinical placement to assist with professional development and life long learning in the area of nutrition and dietetics; and 6. demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills to a range of contemporary nutritional issues.
Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 40% + Clinical competency assessment - OSCE: 40% + Portfolio: 10% + Problem solving task: 10%
Prerequisites: Completion of years 1, 2, 3, and semester one year 4 Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics
