Synopsis: Basic pharmacological mechanisms, methods and general principles. Chemical mediators and how they elicit effects on components of major organ systems (for example nerves, muscle, epithelium).

Objectives: Students will develop an idea of general pharmacological principles and methods used in establishing pharmacological actions of xenobiotics. The specific objectives are to: 1) Identify how endogenous chemical mediators work and establish where they come from. 2) Establish the mechanisms by which these effectors elicit biological effects. 3) Learn the general principles of pharmacology and toxicology through application to major organ systems.

Assessment: Written exam 80% (2 hours). 20 % practical work book
