Synopsis: This contemporary unit is designed to focus on key segments of the tourism industry in Australia, such as indigenous tourism, special event tourism and independent tourism among others. The unit is presented via a number of key industry seminars and a proposed field work study tour to destinations including Sydney and far North Queensland.
Objectives: 1. To provide students with an understanding of how the tourism industry operates from both an Australian and Global perspective. 2. To develop students' capacity to undertake original research on an area of their particular interest. 3. To develop students' written and oral communication skills. 4. To provide students with an understanding of key issues facing the future development of the industry. 5. To provide students with an understanding of the principles of how the internet is applicable to the tourism industry (e-tourism). 6. To provide students with the ability to design a functional web page suitable for the tourism industry.
Assessment: Research paper (5500 words): 60% + Group fieldwork assignment and presentation: 20% + 1.5 hour examination to review key concepts discussed during the course worth: 20%
Contact Hours: 7 x 3 hour lectures, 2 x 2 hour student presentation seminars and a 7 day intensive study tour with industry seminars and field work
