Synopsis: This unit explores the practical and clinical perspectives of ambulance paramedic practice and develops in the student an understanding of the ambulance service as a resource for the community. Areas covered include assessing, planning, implementing and monitoring basic patient care. The systematic approach to the assessment and management of acute illness and injury commonly encountered in ambulance paramedic practice is introduced through the concept of the time critical patient and the fundamental elements of the clinical problem solving approach. This unit is a foundation for more advanced concepts in the second year.
Assessment: Examinations: 50% + Small group activity: 15% + Assignments: 15% + Clinical problem solving worksheet: 10% + Equipment fault finding worksheet: 10% + Practical assessments: Pass/Fail + Objective structured clinical examinations: Pass/Fail
