Emphasis is placed on the practical and vocational elements of professional practice. On completion, students may apply to upgrade to the Bachelor of Social and Community Welfare or the related double degrees. Special requirementsAll applicants are required to complete a social and community welfare course administration form, available from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences, or www.arts.monash.edu.au/humcass/forms.html. Applicants will be short-listed on the basis of information contained in this form. Short-listed, on-campus applicants will be invited to attend a compulsory interview in early December and must also apply through VTAC. Short-listed off-campus learning applicants may be required to do a telephone interview, depending on when they submit their application. Applicants are strongly advised that entry into the course is not solely on academic criteria. Other factors such as work and life experience, personal qualities and maturity are also taken into account. Course structureCourse requirementsA candidate for the diploma must complete the following requirements: (a) A prescribed sequence in social and community welfare (66 points) -- SCW1302, SCW1303, SCW1304, SCW1305, SCW2303, SCW2304, SCW2311, SCW2312, SCW2306, SCW2307. (b) Three supporting units (18 points) chosen from PSS1711*, PSS1712*, SCY1801, SCY1802. (c) DFS1611 or a first-year elective (6 points) (d) A further 6 points in arts at second-year level. (e) A total of 96 points. * The psychological studies units are provided to provide an introduction to understanding our behaviour, which is particularly tailored to those students intending to proceed in the social and community field. Students may choose to replace the psychological studies units with psychology units PSY1011 and PSY1022. Professional recognitionThe course is recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.
