Graduate Diploma in Emergency Health (Paramedic)

Course description

This course builds on the Graduate Certificate of Emergency Health (Paramedic) and continues to support students to improve their clinical practice and knowledge related to the delivery of emergency health services while preparing them for leadership positions. Participants explore their own role and the role of their employer within the context of an integrated emergency medical system, considering the issues and trends that influence scope of practice and service delivery. A learning contract will be used to assist students to identify practice and knowledge gaps and to draw on their workplace experience to promote self-directed learning opportunities aimed at improving their clinical practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have completed a Bachelor of Emergency Health or equivalent. In addition, applicants must currently be employed in a clinically related capacity at a paramedic level by an ambulance service or emergency health service or related agency. Interstate applicants with an equivalent qualification or applicants without an undergraduate degree but with extensive relevant experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. These applicants may be required to undertake preliminary studies such as the graduate certificate or other core paramedic units from the degree conversion course.

Course structure

The course consists of two core units and six electives.

Core units

  • MEH4306 Integrated emergency medical system
  • MEH4308 Paramedic clinical practicum

Elective units

A maximum of two units from the following one of the following groups:

  • CRH1000 Rural health issues and practice
  • CRH1002 Rural health politics and policies
  • CRH1003 Health promotion in rural environments
  • CRH1005 Alcohol and other drug related issues in rural communities
  • CRH1010 Indigenous health

or

  • ECX9720 Introduction to epidemiology and biostatistics
  • MPH2068 Financial issues in health care management
  • MPH2069 Health systems policy
  • MPH2065 Law for health systems

or

  • CPE7601 Healthcare information systems
  • CPE7602 Developing health care information systems
  • CPE7603 Contemporary issues in health informatics
  • CPE7604 Health information systems management
  • EBP1000 Systematic review evidence for treatment intervention
  • EBP1002 Introduction to evidence-based practice

Assessment

Assessment will be a mixture of written assignments, literature review and presentations.
