Course description

This course is designed to meet the needs of teachers, lecturers, trainers, enterprise-based teachers, community educators; educational administrators, policy makers, education managers, and others interested or involved in adult learning, vocational and further education and training, and educators who wish to understand and investigate education policy and practice in a variety of learning contexts, both local and global.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either:

  • an approved three-year bachelors degree in a relevant field with a credit average in the final year, or
  • an approved three-year bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a fourth year of study, or
  • an approved four-year bachelors degree, or
  • qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Course structure

Students are required to successfully complete 72 points, comprising one of the following three options:

  • six units - option one, or
  • five units plus EDF6010/20 Professional project (8000 words) -- option two, or
  • four units plus a research thesis (16,000 words) -- option three.

Option 1

Research core unit
  • An appropriate 12-point research unit will be selected from the faculty suite of research methodology units listed below (taken on advice from the course coordinator or supervisor)
Program elective
  • One program elective unit selected from the list below (12 points)
Specialist electives
  • EDF6801 Educating and learning in the workplace (12 points)
  • EDF6802 Adult education and training: theories and practices (12 points)
General elective unit
  • Two units selected from the list below (totalling 24 points)

Option 2

Research core unit
  • An appropriate 12-point research unit will be selected from the faculty suite of research methodology units listed below (taken on advice from the course coordinator or supervisor)
Program elective
  • One program elective unit selected from the list below (12 points)
Specialist electives
  • EDF6801 Educating and learning in the workplace (12 points)
  • EDF6802 Adult education and training: theories and practices (12 points)
General elective unit
  • One unit selected from the list below (12 points)
Professional project
  • EDF6010/6020 Professional project (A) or (B) (8000 words) (12 points)

Option 3

Research core unit
  • An appropriate 12-point research unit will be selected from the faculty suite of research methodology units listed below (taken on advice from the course coordinator or supervisor)
Program elective
  • One program elective unit selected from the list below (12 points)
Specialist electives
  • EDF6801 Educating and learning in the workplace (12 points)
  • EDF6802 Adult education and training: theories and practices (12 points)
Research thesis
  • EDF6031 Masters thesis part 1 and EDF6032 Masters thesis part 2 (16,000 words) (totalling 24 points)

  • EDF6751 Gender and education
  • EDF6810 Education, work and learning careers
  • EDF6821 Policy and governance

General elective units

Any 12-point units selected from the units offered within the education postgraduate coursework studies programs.

Note that general electives do not need the course coordinator’s approval, unless under exceptional circumstances (ie if the student wishes to enrol in a unit from another faculty).

  • EDF6005 Reading, interpreting and communicating research (12 points)
  • EDF6006 Quantitative approaches to research (12 points)
  • EDF6007 Qualitative approaches to research (12 points)
  • EDF6008 Working with theory in research (12 points)
  • EDF6009 Special topic in research (12 points)
  • EDF6012 Specific focus in research A (6 points)
  • EDF6013 Specific focus in research B (6 points)

Research thesis

The research core unit is a corequisite for the research thesis. It may be taken concurrently with the research thesis or completed prior to the commencement of the research thesis.
