Units indexed by faculty Master of Arts in Interpreting and Translation Studies by coursework and researchCourse code: 2846 + Course abbreviation: MA(Res&Cw) + Course fees: domestic students - fee-waived RTS places available + 1.5 years full-time, 3 years part-time Study mode and course locationOn-campus (Clayton) Course descriptionThis program will enable students to focus their studies around a research thesis in translation/interpreting studies. The coursework component is designed to encourage the theoretical issues and practical application relating to translation/interpreting studies to broaden and deepen the students' understanding of this discipline, thereby providing a fuller appreciation of the context in which the research project will be conceptualised. Entry requirementsApplicants who have completed an honours degree with a grade of H2A or above, or a recognised masters qualifying program with a research component with a distinction average grade or above, and a grade of distinction or above for the research component, may be admitted to the MA in Interpreting and Translation Studies by a combination of coursework and research. Applicants for this program are required to submit a 1000-word research proposal and are accepted into this program subject to there being a suitable member of staff willing to supervise the proposed research. Applicants without previous research experience who have a postgraduate degree such as a fourth-year-level graduate diploma or a masters by coursework with grades of distinction or above in at least three-quarters of the units may be admitted to a 66% research degree and as part of the required 24 points of coursework units enrol for a 12-point supervised research project. Course structureCandidates are requested to complete the following units for a total of 24 points of coursework plus a 66% thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words. Some of the units listed below require prerequisites. These would have normally been completed by those students transferring from the Master of Translation Studies by coursework. Those candidates who have not completed the required prerequisites for the units below may be exempted with the approval of the course coordinator.
Students may also take other fifth-year units in cognate areas, for example Japanese interpreting and translation, with the approval of the course coordinator. External candidatureCandidates will normally be required to enrol on the Clayton campus for all of the units in the coursework component and then apply for transfer to external candidature. Minimum pass gradeThe minimum pass grade for units in the Master of Arts research programs is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
