Course description

The course provides students with critical awareness of women's studies, gender issues and the ways in which sex and gender function in contemporary global contexts. It develops research, writing and oral presentation skills in students in the areas of postcolonialism, cross-cultural consumption and mass media constructions of feminine identity.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements are (a) a bachelors degree, or (b) relevant professional experience. International students must have a bachelors degree. The entry requirements for applicants in category (b) are a minimum of five years of relevant experience at a senior level. In addition, the following information must also be presented: (i) two professional references which comment on the nature and extent of the experience, (ii) a full CV, and (iii) a statement of up to 1000 words indicating the applicant's career objectives and reasons for applying for entry.

Course structure

Students complete one of the following core units:

  • WMN4010 Theorising gender (12 points) (first semester)
  • WMN4020 Feminist research (12 points) (second semester)

plus 12 points chosen from the following:

  • WMN4010 Theorising gender (12 points)
  • WMN3030 Women, media and consumption: feminist cultural studies (6 points)
  • SCY3470 Women, gender and society (6 points)
  • SCY3031 Sexuality, gender and social relations (6 points)
  • WMN3240 Contemporary feminist theory (6 points) (cannot be taken in conjunction with WMN4010, as these units cover the same area)
  • WMN3080 Feminism and popular culture: love, sex and romance (6 points)
  • WMN3150 Rethinking global culture: gender and consumption (6 points)
  • WMN3140 Gender and crime (6 points)
  • WMN4020 Feminist research (12 points)

(Note that part-time students may select both core units to complete the graduate certificate.)
