Course description

The course encourages students to acquire knowledge, not only of Europe, but of the present-day world in the context of a knowledge of Europe’s cultural and intellectual formation, much of which has become part of the cultural and intellectual heritage of the globe. The course is designed for students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including business and economics, law, medicine, the natural sciences, engineering and the humanities and social sciences. It aims to make students aware of the essential political, cultural, social and economic realities of today’s Europe against the background of the evolution of European culture and ideas in modern times.

Entry requirements

Applicants require a bachelors degree other than a BA with a major in European studies.

Course structure

Students are required to complete the equivalent of a major (48 points) in European studies. At first-year level, students take two prescribed units: EUR1100 (European culture and ideas: modernity and enlightenment) and EUR1200 (European culture and ideas: modernity and romanticism), followed by core units and electives at second and third-year level. Students admitted to the graduate diploma negotiate a suitable program of study in consultation with the Centre for European Studies in the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics.
