Course description

This course is designed to meet the needs of graduates from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds who wish to enhance their qualifications for careers in environmental policy and analysis, planning, consulting, education, advocacy and management. It is also designed for those who wish to broaden and deepen their understanding and experience to enable societal and individual change and responsible action to support sustainability. Its comprehensive set of core units provides knowledge and skills to critically analyse problems of environment and sustainability and to propose realistic solutions in both personal and professional settings. Research projects and internships give students the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary real-world contexts and to combine theory and practice in responding to local and global issues at individual, community, corporate and government levels. Electives cater for a wide range of specialised needs and interests.

Entry requirements

A bachelors degree in any discipline with at least a credit average in the final year, or a bachelors pass degree in any discipline with demonstrable professional experience at senior level in a relevant area (these applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and names of two professional referees).

Course structure

Students must satisfactorily complete 72 points of study, comprising a maximum of 48 points of level 4 units and a minimum of 24 points of level 5 units and including core units and electives and either an internship or a research project.

Level 4

Core units

Students will complete the following core units (a total of 24 points):

  • ENV4020 Perspectives on environment and sustainability (6 points)
  • ENV4030 Environmental analysis (6 points)
  • ENV4040 Frontiers in sustainability and environment (6 points)
  • ENV403C Interdisciplinary team research (6 points) (second semester)
Electives

Students will complete 24 points of electives. If a student’s background does not provide knowledge in certain areas, electives would include one or more of the following, chosen in consultation with the course coordinator:

  • ENV414F Ecological systems and management (6 points)
  • GES4890 Earth systems: from biogeochemical cycles to global change (6 points)
  • ENV415F Law and the environment (6 points)
  • ENV416F Introduction to economics (6 points)

The School of Geography and Environmental Science can provide a list of other electives offered across the university. If required, electives may be chosen from level 3 offerings, but only to a maximum of 12 points.

Level 5

Students will complete 24 points comprising:

Core units
  • ENV5050 Environmental governance and citizenship (6 points)
  • ENV533E Environmental internship (12 points), or
  • ENV538C Sustainability project (12 points)
Electives
  • ENV501C Systems thinking and practice

or

  • One approved 6-point elective

Minimum pass grade

To graduate with the Master of Environment and Sustainability, students must gain a credit (60 C) or above in core units and a minimum credit average overall.

Exit points

After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate in Arts, or after successful completion of 48 points with the Graduate Diploma in Environment and Sustainability.
