Debating Difference: Gender, Race and Public Policy ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit will introduce students to a range of contemporary debates in the areas of gender, race and public policy. It will examine how recent Australian legislation and policy have sought to account for the interests, rights and opportunities of differently positioned social subjects. It will explore the philosophies underpinning them, and on-going debates surrounding their implementation and operation. It will explore key concepts such as equity, discrimination, assimilation, affirmative action, multiculturalism, sexual harassment and racial vilification. Students will be encouraged to explore policy-in-action through fieldwork exercises.

Assessment: Library skills exercise (1000 words): 20% + Research essay (2500 words): 50% + Class test (1000 words): 20% + Class participation: 10% + Third-year students will be required to answer examination questions of a more theoretical or conceptual nature.
