Synopsis: (1) discourses in art history includes the social history of art, style, feminist discourses, modernism and the avant-garde, postmodernism, speaking positions in cultural studies; (2) aesthetics and commodities theories of aesthetic value, meaning and symbolic value, consumption distribution and exchange value of art; (3) forms of visual analysis, subjectivity and sexuality, psychoanalytic theories of art and difference, signs and signifying systems in mass media, current critical perspectives, primitivism, postcolonial, modernism, difference, desire and the body, Australian regional exchanges, Aboriginal and Asian.

Assessment: Critical text analysis (2000 words): 20% + Seminar paper (3000 words): 35% + Essay (4000 words): 45%
