Synopsis: The subject invites critical engagement with the sexual politics and idological operations of popular film genres, in particular with representations of masculinity in mainstream, commercial film. Emphasis will be placed upon shifting definitions of masculinity, mostly in recent American cinema. Consideration will be given to the heroic, the mythic and the psychotic identities male protgonists assume in much commercial cinema.
Assessment: Two essays (3500 words each): 80% + Test (2 hours): 20%
Contact Hours: 4 hours (1 x 2 hour screening and 1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
