Undergraduate
(ARTS)

Leader: Conrad Hamann

Offered:
Not offered in 2005.

Synopsis: An exploration of the architecture surrounding us, from European settlement. The unit will emphasise issues and ideas in building design from the later nineteenth century, after an introductory outline of colonial and mid-Victorian architecture. The main focus will be on changes in later nineteenth-century and federation period architecture, emulation of the European and American metropolis; conservatism and nationalism in twentieth-century architecture. Architects considered will include John Horbury Hunt, Walter Burley Griffin, Marian Mahony, Robin Boyd, Roy Grounds, Frederick Romberg, Harry Seidler, Joern Utzon and others.

Objectives: Students should become familiar with the broad directions of Australian architectural culture: where it differs from, or translates, overseas architecture. Students should be able to think and write critically on architectural design and its physical, social and built environment, and be able to discuss individual buildings in depth. Third year students should gain familiarity with the movements and historical arguments shaping our contemporary views of Australian architecture. Any variation from the CUGS guidelines should be explained here: The general objectives of the subject (Second and Third years) are not reduced in scope, since they are essential at a basic level for engagement with the subject. Rather, the range of examples and ares covered will be reduced proportionately in accordance with the appropriate contact hours.

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 45% + Essay (2500 words): 55% + Third year students are expected to undertake wider reading and to show a capacity to work at a more advanced level.

Contact Hours: 2.5 hours (1 lecture and 1 tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: Normally two second-year units in Visual Culture or a related discipline
