Cross-Cultural Art: Asian, American and European ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: The focus is on new forms of art and critical practices in Europe, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific since 1980. Comparisons will be made between artists and aesthetic tendencies with particular emphasis on the cross-cultural practice of immigrants, intercultural practices of indigenous artists, and those who produces socially and politically engaged artworks. Relevant critical debates in postmodern and postcolonial theory on sexual, cultural and racial identity and their intersections, the cross-fertilisation of traditional and contemporary art practices, artists' exchanges, international exhibitions and institutions in a globalised art world.

Assessment: Visual analysis test (1 hour): 40% + Essay (3000 word): 60% + In addition, third-year students should be able to demonstrate in their tutorial discussion and in their writing a high level of cultural reflexivity in their interpretation of the theories, concepts and art analysed.

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: Any second-year sequence in Visual Culture
