Synopsis: The unit offers a critical study of the major artistic movements and tendencies in the contemporary period. The focus is on introducing new forms of art practice and the associated critical concepts as they developed in particular countries, making comparisons with other related movements and examining the critical issues and debates in postmodern theory which are relevant to a current critique. Central themes are modernism/postmodernism, media and new art forms, appropriation and marginalisation, feminist and political art practices, contemporary art practices, sexual/ cultural identity and multiculturalism, violence and conflict.
Assessment: Essay (3000 words): 60% + Visual analysis test (1 hour): 40%
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 lecture and 1 tutorial) per week
Prerequisites: any first-year sequence in Visual Culture
