Synopsis: This elective unit will explore the general role and function of wound management as it relates to reconstructive plastic surgery in the management of clients following trauma, congenital malformation and diseases of the skin and soft tissue. Risk management, physiological and psychosocial aspects are considered in context of pre and post surgical care.

Objectives: At the completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. Discuss the general role and function of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in the management of clients following the presentation of congenital malformation, trauma and diseases of the skin and soft tissue; 2. Design a range of client management plans for the pre and post surgical care of clients following Reconstructive Plastic Surgery: a. based on clinical risk management b. include and address physiological systems and psychosocial issues; and c. provide short, medium and long term goals; 3. Apply the plan of physiological and psychosocial management to the care of clients; 4. Apply the concepts and principles of moist wound healing to the management of wounds; 5. Discuss the evaluation of the outcomes of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.

Assessment: Minor Assignment (40%), Major Written Assignment (1500 words ) (60%)
