Synopsis: Topics covered in general are: Nutrition. Dermatology. Haematology. Gatrointestinal diseases. Electrolyte homeostasis. Oncology. Central nervous system disorders. Psychiatry. Transplant issues. Urogenital disorders. Clinical toxicology. Infectious diseases. Palliative care. Renal disease.
Objectives: Students will develop: - An understanding of the principles of drug therapy in particular patient groups. - An understanding of the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of several common disease states. - An ability in applying these principles in consideration of patient care issues. - An ability in the clinical application of knowledge of pharmacology and therapeutics in selected patient groups. - An appreciation of the role fo the pharmacist in primary health care and patient management.
Assessment: The unit will be assessed by: A written mid-year examination (3 hours). This examination will include a majority of case-based questions that tests application of knowledge and problem-solving A patient-based case study assignment. This assignment involves the addition of a clinical disease-state scenario to individual 'virtual' patients and tests application of clinical knowledge, patient-centred care, and the ability to apply clinical knowledge and therapeutics to a particular patient. A written end-of-year examination (3 hours). This examination will include a majority of case-based questions that tests application of knowledge and problem-solving
Contact Hours: 105 hours Lectures, no practicals, no tutorials It is expected that this unit will require participants to allocate an average of 9 hour per week for 24 weeks (a total of 216 hours per study period to successfully complete this unit.
Prerequisites: Completed third year Bachelor of Pharmacy
Corequisites: There are no special corequisites for this unit
