Synopsis: Drugs used in endocrinology and diabetes. Drugs used in gastrointestinal disorders. Cancer chemotherapy. Pharmacogenetics and adverse effects of drugs. Practical classes using in vivo experiments, computer simulations, seminars and discussion groups.
Objectives: Students will develop an: - Understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of endocrine disorders including diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders and cancer chemotherapy. - Understanding of pharmacogenetics and adverse effects of drugs.
Assessment: End of semester exam: 80% (2 hours) of the assessment . The exam will be in the form of 60 minutes of multiple choice questions and 6 questions requiring approximately 10 minutes of work each. All questions will be aligned to the specific objectives given before each lecture. 15% of the assessment will be in the form of a practical review. The remaining 5% of the assessment will be for practical class participation (assessed via practical class quizzes).
Contact Hours: Number of lectures (26 hours), number of pracs (1 x 6 hours), number of class debates (3 x 3 hours). It is expected that this unit will require participants to allocate an average of 6 hours per week for 13 weeks (a total of 78 hours per study period) to successfully complete this unit.
Prerequisites: All 3rd year Bachelor of Pharmacy units
Corequisites: There are no special corequisites for this unit
