Synopsis: Topics covered in general are: Approach to clinical pharmacy. Introduction to laboratory data. Clinical pharmacokinetics. Primary health care. Drug use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Topics in child health. Geriatrics. Eye disorders. Respiratory disorders. Cardiovascular disorders. Endocrine diseases. Musculo-skeletal disorders.
Objectives: Students will develop: - Understanding of the principles of drug therapy in particular patient groups, and provisions of clinical pharmacy services. - An ability in applying these principles in consideratioin of patient care issues and in clinical interviewing and history taking. - An appreciation of the role of the pharmacist in primary health care.
Assessment: The unit will be assessed by: a written mid-year examination (2 hours). This examination will include a majority of case-based questions that tests application of clinical knowledge and problem-solving A patient-based case study assignment. This assignment involves the addition of a clinical disease-state scenario to individual virtual patients and tests application of clinical knowledge, patient-centred care, and the ability to apply clinical knowledge and therapeutics to a particular patient A written end-of-year examination (3 hours). This examination will include a majority of case-based questions that tests application of knowledge and problem-solving
Contact Hours: 57 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials It is expected that this unit will require participants to allocate and average of 6 hour per week for 24 weeks (a total of 144 hours per study period to successfully complete this unit.
Prerequisites: All second year Bachelor of Pharmacy subjects
Corequisites: There are no special corequisites for this unit
