Pharmacology II A ( 6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: Central Nervous System pharmacology. Non narcotic analgesics. Treatment of headache, sleep disorders, general anaesthesia, anxiety, appetite disorders, depression, epilepsy, psychoses, motor disorders, dementia. Practical classes using in vivo and in vitro experiments, seminars and discussion groups.

Objectives: At the completion of this unit the participant will be able to: 1. Describe the symptoms of the different central nervous system disorders 2. Explain the rationale for prescribing the drugs used in the therapeutic treatment of these disorders 3. Predict adverse effects of the therapeutic drugs used to treat central nervous system disorders based on their mechanism of action 4. Describe the symptoms and treatments of disorders of the eye, nose throat and ears

Assessment: End of semester exam: 80% (2 hours). The exam will be in the form of 60 minutes of multiple choice questions and 6 questions requiring approximately 10 minutes of work each. All questions will be aligned to the specific objectives given before each lecture. 15% of the assessment will be in the form of a practical review. The remaining 5% of the assessment will be for practical class participation (assessed via practical class quizzes).

Contact Hours: 26 lectures (26 hours) and 4 practical classes of 3 hours duration. It is expected that this unit will require participants to allocate an average of 6 hours per week for 13 weeks (a total of 78 hours per study period) to successfully complete this unit.

Prerequisites: All 2nd year Bachelor of Pharmacy units.
