Synopsis: Methods of differentiation; first and second derivatives and their application to maxima and minima problems. Integration methods and their application to rate equations (zero and first order) and chemical kinetics. Half life. Exponential and power functions; plots using logarithmic scale graph papers. Triangular graph paper; plots and calculations. Integration methods and the solution of simple ordinary differential equations. The principles of partial differentiation, first and second derivatives, with an emphasis on application to thermodynamics and diffusion theory. Students will gain and appreciation of the application of calculus to physical chemistry, pharmaceutics and formulation
Objectives: Students will develop an: - Understanding of the basic methods of differentiation and integration and their application to maxima and minima problems. Rate equations and chemical kinetics; logarithmic scale and triangular graph papers; solution of simple ordinary differential equations; the principles of partial differentiation with an emphasis on application to thermodynamics and diffusion theory. - Understanding of the presentation of statistical datal probability distributions, the concept of a sampling distribution and application to the derivation of confidence intervals; making statistically based decisions using hypotheses testing; the theory of regression and correlation. - Ability in performing calculations concerned with calculus and statistics. - Appreciation of the application of calculus and statistics to physical chemistry, pharmaceutics and formulation.
