VCF2021

Chemistry II ( 9 points, SCA Band 2, 0.188 EFTSL)

Undergraduate
(PHA)

Leader: Dr Richard Prankerd

Offered:
Parkville First semester 2005 (Day)

Synopsis: Analytical chemistry - spectroscopic methods, chromatography, quantitation and statistics. Colloid and surface chemistry - stability, preparation, properties, micelles and liquid crystals, films, emulsion and microemulsions, surface tension and adsorption. Polymer chemistry - hydrophobic polymers, water soluble polymers, co-polymers, block co-polymers.

Objectives: Students will develop: - An understanding of colloid and surface chemistry as a basis for the selectioin of ingredients to achieve formulation objectives, and of analytical techniques that can be applied to evaluation of formulations. - The ability to perform standard quantitative chemical analyses including common titrimetric, spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. - An appreciation of the importance of polymer, colloid and surface, and analytical chemistry in the rational formulation of a broad range of products.

Assessment: Two examination papers (2.5 hours each).

Prerequisites: All 1st year B.Form. Sci units

Corequisites: There are no special co-requisites for this unit
