Clayton First semester 2005 (Day)
Synopsis: This unit is designed to equip masters students with critical and theoretical skills appropriate to the study of art history and visual culture at an advanced level. Topics to be considered will include theories of the image, representation and meaning, the operation of ideology, especially in relation to race and gender, social theories (including Marxist and neo-Marxist accounts), applications of psychoanalysis to the visual field, postmodernism and its critiques, cyberculture, and recent theorisations of visual culture.
Assessment: First Essay (3000 words): 30% + Second essay (6000 words): 70% + Fifth-year students will be expected to read more widely and work at a higher level.
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
