Synopsis: (i) Language: A review of Ukrainian grammar; development of conversation and composition skills using texts on contemporary themes. (ii) Literature and society: An introduction to major cultural, social and political developments in Ukraine in the nineteenth century; the study of selected literary texts from Kotliarevs'kyi to Franko.

Objectives: On completing this course students should have acquired a knowledge of basic Ukrainian grammar. They should be able to read, write and understand the standard language at a level of non-technical everyday communication, and to speak at a level of basic communication, using correct forms and pronunciation. Students should be able to translate texts of moderate difficulty into and out of Ukrainian with the aid of a dictionary. Students should also have gained an understanding of the development of Ukrainian literature in its Classicist, Romantic and Realist phases, a detailed knowledge of selected texts, and basic skills in literary analysis and criticism.

Assessment: Examinations (2 hours): 25% + Language weekly homework: 25% + Two 10-minute tutorial papers: 10% + Test (30 minutes): 10% + Literature and society essay (1500 words): 20% + Tutorial paper (500 words): 10%
