Synopsis: Practice in formulaic language used in speeches and the acquisition techniques to interpret speeches. Further training in note-taking and other skills to interpret speeches of approximately 10 minutes. Practice in simultaneous interpreting may also be introduced. Topics focus on industry, social structure, economic affairs, international affairs and business communication etc.
Objectives: 1. Students successfully completing this unit should have achieved a high level of competency to be able to provide LOTE-English / English-LOTE consecutive interpreting in general areas and some specialised areas; 2. Students successfully completing this unit should have achieved an adequate level of competency to be able to provide LOTE-English simultaneous interpreting in general areas; 3. and should achieve a comprehensive understanding of the interpreting profession.
Assessment: Weekly Assignments (4,000 words): 45%; Essay (2,000 words): 20%; End-of-semester test (2,000 words): 25%; Class participation (1,000 words): 10%
