Synopsis: The unit aims to develop in students the ability to translate texts of increasing levels of complexity and expertise in a variety of textual genres. The unit combines a generic, classroom-based component, in which some of the theoretical issues from the parallel core subject, TRN4030 Introduction to Translation Studies, are discussed, with web-based translation assignments tailored to individual target languages, involving the practical application of theoretical insights. Translation will be bi-directional - to and from English.
Objectives: On completion of the unit, students will be able to: i) identify the problems different text genres pose for translation ii) translate a variety of document genres by applying critical insights from translation theory and methodology iii) access, translate and return Web-based documents iv) use suitable strategies to create text in the target language
Assessment: Weekly translation exercises and assignments Equivalent to 6000 words 50%, mid-semester test 1hr 20%, Final examination 2hrs 30%
Contact Hours: One two-hour seminar per week and the equivalent of two hours interactive Web-based work
