Synopsis: This is the first in a series of Cultural Strategy Units. It is an interdisciplinary arts laboratory in which the students will develop and refine their critique process married to their creative practice. This first unit is introductory in nature. It is focussed on providing the groundwork for the program through an investigation of major theoretical approaches to culture. Issues such as those of multiculturalism, ethnicity, class and sexuality will be investigated in their significance and effect on our culture. The issue of analysing and evaluating culture within critical and theoretical frameworks will be examined.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, students will: 1. demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of theories of culture, 2. employ theoretical frameworks in the analysis of specific case studies, 3. develop presentational and critical skills in the examination of their own practice, 4. instigate the process (which will be consolidated in Cultural Strategy 2) of formulating critical discourse informed by, and responsive to cultural theory.
