Synopsis: The unit investigates the role of visual perception and the imagination in the production and interpretation of works of art and design. Theories about the formation of symbols and the functioning of visual symbols in society and culture are considered. Aesthetic judgement and the factors which influence such judgement in the individual and society will be examined. The question of whether taste is a trait of personality, and the links between intelligence, experience and taste will be explored. The unit seeks to inculcate a critical approach to both speculative and empirical accounts of the creative endeavour.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, students will: 1.be able to distinguish and discuss the basic elements of visual perception; 2.be able to relate certain descriptive methods to the perceptual functions of the eye and brain and critically evaluate various systems for recording perception; 3.be able to demonstrate familiarity with at least two significant theories of the origins of symbolic images and their cultural influences, and be capable of discussing these in a critical manner; 4.be capable of placing selected theories of the role of the imagination in creativity into the context of art and design; 5.have some understanding of the factors which bear on the arousal of artistic talent in individuals; 6.appreciate the effects of individual differences on judgements about art and design and understand the contribution of empirical analyses of those differences; 7.understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study

Assessment: One exercise (1000 words; 30%) one essay (2000 words; 40%) and one visual test (30%).

Contact Hours: 12 hours per week including; 2 hours lectures and 1 (one) hour tutorial and 9 hours of independent study
