Synopsis: Students will be introduced to some fundamental issues underlying the design of quantitative social research along with a range of bivariate and multivariate techniques for the analysis of quantitative data using SPSS. Areas covered include: descriptive statistics; chi-square analysis; correlation and regression; analysis of variance; factor analysis and reliability analysis.

Objectives: To provide students with:a basic set of tools with which to design quantitative social research projects;appropriate skills to analyse bivariate and multivariate quantitative data using SPSS.

Assessment: Major report (4500 words): 50% + Minor report (2000 words): 20% + SPSS Master test (2 hours): 20% + Student participation : 10% Additional comment: No prior knowledge of SPSS is necessary.

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
