Synopsis: This unit will present a lifespan developmental approach to ageing. The impact of changing roles in society, community and family will be explored as will sources of variation including gender, class, culture, disability and sexuality. The concept of healthy ageing and the impact of current social policies on this will be examined.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students should: 1. Understand the specific developmental tasks that confront the elderly and be able to understand the impact of gender, class, culture, sexuality and disability on development; 2. Be aware of the impact on the elderly of ageism, and understand the impact of recent demographic and social changes on the process of ageing.

Assessment: Weekly assignment tasks (80%) + essay (20%) 2000 words
