Synopsis: The unit comprises two parts. 'Critical and Creative Social Work Theory and Practice' is a critical examination of social work theory as a basis for the integration of social work knowledge and practice. 'Child Abuse and Child Protection' uses the same principles in a critical examination of the child protection field.

Objectives: The learning objectives are for students to know and understand the complexities and limitations in current theoretical approaches to social work practice; reflect upon their practice to date and how this has been influenced be their values and attitudes as well as external factors such as agency settings; reflect upon key concepts of social work practice (for example the social worker-client relationship); develop an understanding of social work practice from the perspective of different client groups (for example children); be able to develop and apply frameworks for understanding problems at personal and societal levels.

Assessment: Critical and Creative Social Work Theory and Practice - Essay (3000 words): 70% + Child Abuse and Child Protection - Essay (1500 words): 30%

Prerequisites: SWK4410. Social Work units are available only within the context of the Bachelor of Social Work degree, or with permission.
